Real property taxes are billed by cities and townships in July and December of each year, and are payable to city and township treasurers through the last business day in February of the succeeding year. If not paid before March 1, taxes become delinquent and are payable to the County Treasurer. Public Act 123 of 1999 is the law that governs delinquent tax collections in the state of Michigan. Delinquent taxpayers have 25 months to pay their taxes. Property owners face higher interest and fees for not paying their taxes. Taxes that are delinquent more than a year will have a substantially higher interest rate, along with additional fees. If not paid, the property is foreclosed and sold at auction. Quit claim deeds are given to successful bidders. Foreclosed properties may also be acquired by the County Land Bank Authority.
