Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected blacklegged ticks. If left untreated, Lyme disease can cause serious health problems.
Even so, the Michigan Department of Community Health recommends that you be aware of Lyme disease, but do not be so concerned that you don't enjoy being outdoors. The risk of developing the illness in Michigan is very small and even if the infection occurs, the disease can be diagnosed and treated with antibiotics.
