Owners or operators of body art facilities are required to apply for a Body Art Facility License through the Department of Community Health. Public Act 149 (PA 149), which was enacted in December 2007, indicates that individuals shall not tattoo, brand, or perform body piercing on another individual unless that tattooing, branding, or body piercing occurs at a body art facility licensed by the Michigan Department of Community Health.

As directed by the Department of Community Health, the Marquette County Health Department will conduct all plan reviews for new facilities and annual inspections.
