What is Healthy Kids?
Healthy Kids is a Medicaid health care program for low-income children under the age of 19 and also for pregnant women of any age. There is an income limit. Healthy Kids is free except for small co-pays for some services if you are age 21 or older.
To qualify, you or your children must:
- Be under age 19, or pregnant
- Have a Social Security Number ( or have applied for one)
- Live in Michigan, even for a short time
- Be a U.S. citizen or a qualified immigrant
- Meet monthly family income limits
*For "applicants" who are born in Michigan, DHS will attempt to verify citizenship through the State of Michigan Dept. of Vital Records. If verification is not successful, then DHS will contact the applicant requesting verification by either a copy of the birth certificate or passport.

How do I Apply for Healthy Kids?
You may apply for Healthy Kids at your local Department of Human Services (DHS) office located at 234 W. Baraga Ave., Marquette, MI 49855, or an application can also be picked up at the Marquette County Health Department, 184 US 41 Hwy East, Negaunee, MI 49866. Another option is to apply online at www.healthcare4mi.com. In 30 minutes or less, you will find out if you qualify!
After Applying, What Happens?
DHS determines eligibility, and you will receive notification within 30 days of the date of application. If you are eligible, a MIHealth card will be mailed to you. Please present this card to the medical provider each time you receive medical services.
What if Things Change?
You must report to your DHS worker within 10 days any changes that may affect eligibility, such as:
- Pregnancy ends
- Income
- Employment
- Health insurance coverage
- Persons at home
- Address
